Triumph Daytona 675 Shifting Issue

Question

Anyone ever have an issue with their 675 not wanting to shift when riding with a passenger? I had a passenger ride with me for the first time last night and the bike would not shift at all with her on it. As soon as she would hop off it would shift flawlessly. She was only 5’ 2” and weighed roughly 115ish lbs so I highly doubt weight is the issue. Just seeing if anyone else has ran into this before.

The only thing I can think of is if your chain is too tight. It can cause difficulties shifting, and the extra passenger weight would pull it a bit more taught than if it was just you on the bike.

That’s gotta be it. That’s really the thing that would change with more weight. Do it quickly too, you run the risk of overly stressing your bearings and sprockets if you leave it like that.

    25-32mm is spec I believe. 1″-1 1/4″

I’m assuming 25-32mm is the amount of slack recommended?

Yeah I guess I should’ve been a little more clear about that.

No worries. Thanks for the advice! I’ll check it when I get home this evening and update you.

If you’re gonna ride 2-up often I’d recommend you stand the bike up and have someone else check the free play while you’re sitting on the bike so it has some weight on the suspension.

Already had that planned for tonight lol. Gonna toss the rear up on the stand with me sitting on it after I adjust it and gonna have the room mate shift through the gears.

Awesome, that’s the way I always set them, have for years so you should be able to get it all fixed up!

They like to be on the loose side of spec. Too tight and you can damage the countershaft bearing and/or prematurely stretch the chain. In an extreme situation the chain could break also. I usually give it a quick check with the toe of my boot after she goes back in the garage.

I was going to suggest the same thing as these gentlemen. It’s nice to see quick and helpful responses on here!

Too tight also limits the suspension travel and feels similar to an overly stiff spring.

I rode with my fiance as a passenger recently and noticed the bike shifted harder with her on the back while using the Quick shifter… I was able to use the clutch to upshift seamlessly… These guys might be onto something with the chain tension.
