FZ-07 and M4 Exhaust

Question

Who has retuned their bike after getting the m4 installed? I’ve heard some saying yes and some no so I just curious to what you guys say. Mine is a bit poppy decelerating and i’ve read that it’s because its running lean and needs to be tuned. But then I talked to a mechanic and he said its normal.. soooo. Not sure what to think. I’m a semi new rider so I can use some wisdom

Why? Did u have any problem with yours? Because I’m about to get the M4 exhaust.

No I’m just wondering. I’ve heard some saying yes and some no so I just curious to what people say. Mine is a bit poppy decelerating and i’ve read that it’s because its running lean and needs to be tuned. But then I talked to a mechanic and he said its normal.. soooo. Not sure what to think.

If it is popping then it is on the lean side. This occurs without the tune because the ECU completely shuts off the fuel when you get off the throttle. Your mechanic is correct that decel pops are normal with stock ECU. However, with a flash of the ECU, you will tack advange of the extra air flow and get a bit more power and less extreme engine braking.

pretty normal . air/fuel mixture may be off but not a big deal. It make correct itself. make sure to use 87 octane like as recommended

Went hordpower after a season of just the m4. Bike is insane. Love the sounds. Rides like a dream. The two kids I rode with today were in love. So loud. So snappy. Hordpower intake and tune is the fucking top mod for this bike.

Is it bad to run higher octane???

I try to run the higher stuff.

I’m running m4 with k&n installed a dobeck ejk, cleaned it up real nice

its definitely normal and to be honest i love that sound but maybe thats just me

My M4 pops a little bit without a tune. I like that about it. \nDoes it need to be tuned? No. \nShould it? Ehh… ya since it’s a new pipe. Since you’re changing the exhaust is should be tuned. \nIs there loss in power without a tune? Seems like there was a very tiny loss in power with it running slightly lean without the tune, but nothing crazy. I’ll eventually get it dyno tuned for the HP gains, just need to save up and install a few more parts. \n\nNothing you should worry about. And yes, that very slight exhaust leak with the M4 at the clamp is also normal. (Though it should go away over time as it gets broken in)

Thanks for all the input guys.. Love this page. My braaaaps give 2 shits now.

If 2WDW is out of question, also consider an EJK. It’s a cheap workaround

There is a difference between leaner and too lean. Electronic fuel injection lean limit is said to be at 22/1 (air-fuel ratio). As long as you don’t reach those numbers you wont hurt your engine. It might run warmer but it doesn’t mean it’s gonna burn your pistons. Now being leaner will change the behavior of the engine. There are many different “situations” where different afr are required. These are usual afr settings:
6.0 AFR – Rich Burn Limit (engine fully warm)
9.0 AFR – Black Smoke / Low Power
11.5 AFR – Best Rich Torque at Wide Open Throttle
12.2 AFR – Safe Best Power at Wide Open Throttle
13.3 AFR – Lean Best Torque
14.6 AFR – Stoichiometric AFR (Stoich)
    15.5 AFR – Lean Cruise
16.5 AFR – Usual Best Economy
18.0 AFR – Carbureted Lean Burn Limit
22.0+ AFR – EEC / EFI Lean Burn Limit

When your a/f mix is not optimal you won’t get the best results from your engine. This is why I asked for data logs last week but couldn’t find any. If we could see the actual data logged from a stock ecu map with slip on we could see exactly how off we are from those guidelines which would tell us exactly how “bad” it can be for the engine’s internal components. I don’t think it can hurt your bike from my personal experience but you surely will see better results with a tune

Now I know lots of people won’t agree but from my personal experience/ aircraft engineer classes and many afr tuners website, that “popping” when decel isn’t because you are lean, it’s the opposite you might be too rich.
I’ll paste this text here coming from a tuner’s website:

Lean Conditions – Common Side Affects
    Hotter Engine Temperatures
    Detonation / Pinging
    Hesitation in Throttle Response

Rich Conditions – Common Side Affects
    Engine Flooding
    Decel Pop / Backfiring
    Lethargic Throttle Response
    Excess Carbon Build-up (sooty pipes)
    Fuel Smell from the Exhaust

I seen cars with excessive airflow ending up too rich because the ecu tries to compensate too much. Hard to explain in simple lines but if anyone get tuned with only a slip-on feel free to ask for some data logs to your tuner, we could finally know exactly what’s going on!

The bikes come lean from factory… so that very well could be it.
