Most NFs will let you do free dispersed primitive camping within so many feet of a road. Call the ranger station and see if they have provisions for that in your area. Can’t beat free!

Clark is right. Most of your National Forest do allow for dispersed primitive camping. Although you do have to be at a certain distance from the road or from the pathway. Check with the ranger station like he said and see what the rules for the local National Forest is.\n\nAlthough it is not free, I do know of a place that has primitive cabins that one can use. Check out Arrowmont Stable and Cabins in Cullowhee near Western Carolina University

I know you can camp for free in parts of the Pisgah National forest, if you are going to be in the area for a bit head over to Brevard NC, some of the most beautiful waterfalls you will find.
