Found the shrapnel

Question

Got the cam cover off. Found the shrapnel. Looks to me like I need new cams as well. Anyone think differently?

Andrez Escamilla;
I think the oil went bad from too much heat thinking of added the Harley fan assisted oil cooler to my ultra to keep the oil from going bad to too heat and then causing premature engine damage.

  1. If nothing else. You can put the cam you want in it.

  2. Definitely new cams

  3. What kind of oil are you using? Just curious.

  4. What year and how many miles ?

  5. 08 with 41k. Last 6k with a 110ci kit.

  6. Gear drive….worth the money. Never have to worry about it again

  7. Check with Harley , I think that year may have had a recall for that very same problem.

  8. At 38K miles my stock tensioners look new. (Synth oil always).

  9. buddy of mine is a top-shelf wrench. He figures the push rod wasn’t adjusted correctly – so the lifter wasn’t where it was supposed to be when it was supposed to be there. He says replace cam, lifters, rods, and check oil pump. Also check lifter block

  10. I would like to know why the hell they paint inside there and on the stator side

  11. Any suggestions for replacement cams? Talked with S&S and they recommended 585 easy starts.

  12. Change them no matter what! It’s already all apart!

  13. I have a set of cases for sale if your interested pm me

  14. what else does harley make that not reliable?

  15. Seems like you need to consider a total overhaul of that engine….
