2016 KTM 300 XC-W

Question

I live in south Africa and was hoping if anyone can shed a bit of light on a barrel issue I have on a ktm 300 XC-W 2016. I have done 45 hours on my bike. Im not a hard enduro rider more of a weekend warrior riding every second weekend with some river beds and rocky climbs. I use a 50.1 motrex oil mix, clean my air filter after ride and oil it. Oil changes to the engine every 20 hours. Whats happening is im getting excessive wear on the intake ports the nikasil and rings with loss of compression and bike not wanting to idel. At 45 hours I replaced a piston and rings and had a visual look at the barrel and to me it looked ok 11 hours after I replaced it the same happened again but this time the barrel was way worse and the nikasil had been removed from the ports about 2 mm up. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. When talking to other guys in south Africa they say its only in our area wich I find hard to believe as there’s about 5-7 of us only on the 2016 and 2 on a 2017 having these problems. And our jetting is as the book say for us at the coast.

I’ve heard of Nikasil not reacting well to certain fuels which is usually region specific. BMW had a similar problem in the 90s. I used to work for BMW and we replaced blocks left and right. I can’t remember if it was the Nikasil or Alumasil that had the problems.

I will ask guys what fuel they use and see if there’s a common thread thanks. Im really not sure what else to look for. A Friend just put on a barrel 60 hours ago and the same 2 pistons down and bad ports no compression.

Avoid fuel with bio ethanol it’s lethal to the motor

    Try buying non ethanol fuel.

Why not give Alfie Cox or maybe Russell Campbell a call and see what they can tell you….

I don’t think it’s a fuel problem I think there’s something wrong either the cylinders out of round or something’s wrong from the factory I would take the barrel into the dealer and see if KTM can figure out what the problem is
