2004 Z1000 is weeping oil

Question

My new to me 2004 Z1000 is weeping oil. It only appears once the bike’s done 10 miles or so. On short rides it only appears once the bike is turned off and sat for 10 minutes or so. The dealer says it’s an excess of chain lube. The oil is warm, but not hot like I imagine engine oil would be. Any Listers seen this before? Thanks in anticipation.

I had same on mine. It was chain lube. Take the front sprocket cover off and clean it inside.. Mine had so much shit built up in there.

Mate. If you’ve over lubed your chain. That’s where it ends up. Done this loads of times. 😂

My gen 1 does it too, looks bad but nothing to worry about.

I took the sprocket cover off. It was quite clean inside, some oily residue, but the chain and sprocket were clean. I’ll keep an eye on it and if it continues have the shop check to see it’s not a seal gone, although looking at the engine there’s no obvious leak, nor does there seem to be any where close to where the oil drips for it to leak from.

Get it up on a paddock stand, or Abba stand, and clean chain with wd40 and babywipes. Use a chain brush if you have one. Get it spotless. Leave 20 mins, all wd40 evaporates, and chain will be dry. Go for a quick spin, and see if it still happens before you lube it again. That will at least tell you if it’s just excess fling

Well, after checking yesterday and riding to work this morning (my first commute on it) and getting home again this afternoon, no drips :-). I think the dealer gave it a clean when I went back to the last Wednesday. I’ll keep an eye on it over the coming days. Thanks to all.
