2003 Honda Shadow Ace

Question

Hello guys , just got a 2003 Honda shadow ace . The bike won’t idol (engine just die after ignition switch are pressed ) unless I pull for the choke for around 30 sec after the engine rev high and warmed up I release the choke and bike idols fine normally(also run smoothly as it only has 6000km on it ). The guys from the shop says the choke is needed on ignition every time while the engine is cold , but I expect is a dirty carb / jet problem, can you guys give me some clue if the shop is giving me correct information? It’s actually 30 degrees C I don’t think it’s actually that cold. I am using the bike as a transportation for on and off work, I didn’t have problem needing ignition with choke with my previous bike .

My 92 is the same way. If I don’t choke it every start, won’t idle. 30 sec seems a little long, I only need 5 or 10 of decent rev then it’s fine

Cheers bud , guess I am not the only one with this problem

Even after is warmed up, after a ride I mean, I still have to rev a little when starting it or it idles poorly

If it has carbs, clean em

MINE DOES SAME THING NEED CHOKE TO START UNLESS IT WAS JUST SHUT OFF BUT CAN TURN CHOKE OFF IN QUARTER MILE

Logan, choke for 30 seconds is completely normal.

Where do you live, cold weather area? I’m in Arizona, rarely need choke.

In the early mornings it has been in the 60s here in Dallas.

I don’t ever choke mine unless it’s just freezing and I’ll ease it in right after I crank it to where it’s running a little more then a good idle for a minute or so. Then off it goes.

They are a enrichment deal really. You don’t have the butter fly In rear of carb that closes anymore.

My 750 aero will start without choke and run, clean the carbs

Hondas generally run vt lean from the factory and if you live In a cold environment you’ll need the choke every time. Unless you want to richer the mixture slightly. 1/4 turn out should be enough

    Hondas are cold natured

I live in 30-40C, with nights at 20-30C and generally I don’t need to choke my 99 vlx.

My 2002 spirit was the same way when I first got it, but after I had it a while it stopped needing to be choked until the temp gets down to the 30’s. I think it was from lack of use so I think it just needs to be ridden. Good luck

I always choke mine when it’s cold. It seems to run better. I’ll close choke after about 30 sec
